Next 'Celebrating Calling' event announced

Published on 8 August 2025 2 minutes read

Very Rev Dr Martin Fair, our Pathways to Ministry Manager, writes about the next 'Celebrating Calling' event for those who might be interested in ministry on Saturday 13 September 2025 from 1-4pm in Perth.

Celebrating Calling Event
Members of staff promoting Celebrating Calling.

The Apostle Peter promised that he would follow after Jesus… "even if I have to die with you." Now there's a bold statement if ever there was one!

Those who love their music might hear an echo of something of Peter's promise in the chorus of The Calling's classic song, ‘Wherever You Will Go':

If I could, then I would

I'll go wherever you will go
Way up high or down low
I'll go wherever you will go.

Pretty much from the time when Jesus went public with his ministry there were those who responded to his call and were ready to follow him. Then there were others who started out but fell away when the going got tough. And there were those who said ‘no' from the beginning having judged that what was being asked of them was a price they weren't prepared to pay.

The good news is that still now, even in a country like Scotland where the populous seems less thirled to its Church than once was the case, God is still calling people to serve in ministry.

And the even better news? People are still saying yes.

Of course it's true that all Christians are called to serve but within that there are callings to specific ministries.

What about you? Might God have a specific calling upon your life? Are you ready to go wherever you are called – to do whatever you're called to do?

The People & Training Team has scheduled the next in its series of Celebrating Calling events and it's for anyone who is – even in the slightest way – sensing something of that calling. It's for those who are sure and for those who aren't even nearly sure.

It's going to be held at Letham: St. Mark's Church in Perth on Saturday 13 September 2025 from 1-4pm. The programme starts with a light lunch and then gives way to:

  • a number of short talks with some of those who have already responded to God's call
  • insight and experience into how a person can come to discern what God's call looks like
  • opportunity for group and one-to-one chats that attendees might hear from others and have opportunity to ask their own questions and express their own excitement alongside their doubts and misgivings.

Here's the thing; if God is calling you that's not going to go away! Why not test that call? What's to lose by doing some exploration?

Reserve a place at Celebrating Calling by emailing the Towards Ministry Team at ministry@churchofscotland.org.uk or by calling the Church of Scotland Offices on 0131 225 5722 and asking for a member of the Team.

Is this your moment?
