Couple celebrate 65th wedding anniversary at church where they were married - and the best man and bridesmaid were there too.

Published on 22 January 2025 1 minute read

To celebrate your 65th wedding anniversary is an amazing milestone but to do so in the company of your best man and bridesmaid is truly remarkable.

That is exactly what Nan and Leslie Morton did at Fenwick Parish Church in Ayrshire on Sunday.

They were accompanied by best man John Howie and bridesmaid May McFarlane who carried out their duties on 19 January, 1960 beautifully.

It is a friendship that has stood the test of time and all four are faithful and cherished members of the village church and regularly attend.

The service was led by Rev Kim Watt and the first hymn sung was Psalm 121, 'I to the hills will lift mine eyes' which was the retired dairy farmer couple's wedding hymn.

The minister said the congregation was delighted to be part of the blue sapphire anniversary celebration and gave Mr and Mrs Morton a round of applause as well as flowers and cards.

Addressing the congregation, Ms Watt said: "Today we are part of a rather special celebration for today is the 65th wedding anniversary for Nan and Leslie Morton, who were married in this church on this day in 1960 by Rev Bruce Young.

"Nan was telling me that there was a heavy snow fall and John Howie, who was Leslie's best man was doubtful that Nan would ever make it to the church through the snow.

"Fortunately, she did and we are here once more with you and in God's gracious presence to offer you our love and congratulations on this very special day.

"And what is even more special and probably really unique is with Nan and Leslie is Nan's bridesmaid May and John, the best man, is here too.

"How often does something like that happen?

"We are very blessed and photographs will be taken for sure, we are not letting you out the door without photographs of such a special and unique occasion.

"We offer you our warmest congratulations."

Mrs Morton is an accomplished landscape painter and Mr Morton is well known locally as a bee keeper.

Rev Bruce Young is the uncle of brothers Simon and Mark Young who are both serving elders on Fenwick Parish Church's Kirk Session.

The couple's wedding reception was held at the Parkstone Hotel in Prestwick, which is still trading today.
