Christian Aid launches emergency appeal following devastating Myanmar earthquake

Published on 31 March 2025 1 minute read

International development charity Christian Aid has launched an urgent fundraising appeal in the wake of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake which struck central Myanmar on Friday.

Earthquake Damage In Myanmar
Damage in Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city.

The charity's partners are reporting people have been severely impacted by the disaster, including many who saw their homes destroyed or badly damaged. Access to vital services such as water, power and basic foods have been critically disrupted.

Immediate emergency support is now urgently needed, including food parcels, water kits, shelters, and cash for essential supplies.

And – with the generous help of its supporters – Christian Aid is mobilising to assist its partners and quake-affected communities with essential aid and recovery over the coming weeks and months.

Christian Aid has been working through partners in Myanmar for decades.

Head of Christian Aid Scotland Val Brown said: "Myanmar is one of the world's poorest countries and the earthquake has had a devastating impact on a country already facing humanitarian challenges. Our partners are telling us that people have been severely impacted – many have seen their homes destroyed or badly damaged. Many people are now resorting to sleeping in the streets.

"At this early stage the immediate emergency support that we can offer includes food parcels, water kits, shelters and cash for essential supplies."
